South Durham

Catrin Jenkins of The Forestry Commission

Event type: Meeting
Date: 14th April 2026

Who knew this government body employed archaeologists?

Catrin gave us a smartly paced history not only of the Commission but also of woodland in the British Isles from 60/70% overall cover in prehistory to a measly 10% in England now.

I venture to say that we all left convinced of the good work done by this quango (often a term of abuse). On the way we were reminded of benefits like biodiversity, land improvement, exercise and mental wellbeing. And of challenges like global warming, wildfires, storms and demand for new housing.

We asked loads of questions and went away with informative literature and all the freebies. I just got the last pencil…

PS - By coincidence, Radio 4’s Open Country the following Thursday featured a professional deer stalker employed by the Forestry Commission to keep the population down.
