An enthusiast for his subject, Denis took us on a wild chase from the Lumiere Brothers of the 1890s onwards. He’d just about got into the 1970s when prompted by his wife, I had to stop him. On a second screen we also watched a short Chaplin film (I never realised this star was so good on roller skates). At one point we even donned 3D glasses.
All these awakened memories - of usherettes, ABC Minors, smoking (progressively banned from the 1970s). I suddenly remembered the small news cinemas in London’s West End, handy in the 50s for avoiding the rain but also as I’ve since realised, useful for clandestine hookups. I don’t know about you but I’m still going to the flicks. They’re nice and cool these days, especially in the afternoon.
